Functional Nutrition
Personalized nutrition guidance based on your health history, lifestyle, symptoms, and individual needs.
At Functional Medicine Collaborative, functional nutrition goes beyond general diet advice. Our licensed dietitian/nutritionist works with patients to understand how nutrition, lifestyle, health history, and individual needs may be influencing their overall health and develops practical, personalized recommendations to support their goals.
What is Functional Nutrition?
Functional nutrition is an individualized approach to nutrition that considers how diet, lifestyle, health history, symptoms, and other factors may influence a person's overall health. Rather than using the same recommendations for everyone, nutrition guidance is tailored to the individual's needs and goals.
Functional nutrition may be used to support a variety of health concerns, including digestive health, metabolic health, nutrient deficiencies, fatigue, and other chronic or complex concerns. Recommendations may include dietary changes, meal planning, lifestyle strategies, and supplements when appropriate.
What to Expect During Your Functional Nutrition Visit
Your functional nutrition visit is designed to provide a comprehensive look at your health history, current concerns, nutrition, lifestyle, and goals. From there, your provider can develop practical, individualized recommendations to support your needs.
Here’s what you can expect:
1. A Comprehensive Review of Your Health History
We’ll explore your medical background, current symptoms, lifestyle habits, stress levels, sleep, digestion, and dietary patterns to get the full picture.
2. Personalized Nutrition Guidance
We’ll discuss your current diet and identify key areas for support. You’ll receive tailored recommendations that are realistic, sustainable, and aligned with your health goals.
3. Looking at Contributing Factors
We’ll consider factors such as digestive health, blood sugar regulation, nutrient intake, lifestyle, and other areas that may be relevant to your symptoms and overall health.
4. Lab Testing (If Needed)
When appropriate, laboratory testing may be recommended based on your health history, symptoms, and individual needs. Results can help inform nutrition and lifestyle recommendations as part of your care plan.
5. Clear, Actionable Plan
You’ll leave with a customized nutrition and lifestyle plan, including dietary suggestions, meal ideas, possible supplement recommendations, and next steps.
6. Ongoing Support
Functional nutrition is a process. Follow-up visits provide an opportunity to assess your progress, make adjustments, and provide ongoing support as your needs and goals change.
